Wedding Anniversary

Yesterday we celebrated our first year anniversary. We decided to make the civil wedding the official one because one, the January 19 is too controversial (2 exes got
married on that date) and two, we just thought it makes sense because that's the first wedding and that's when we started living as husband and wife. The church wedding is just for formality sake.

So anyway, I was doing this wedding anniversary countdown thing on my tumblr site and figured I should compile all those posts there here.

So here you go.

----------------------------------

1st wedding anniversary countdown: day 1 - monogram

countdown to our first wedding anniversary starts today!
excited! excited to eat the frozen wedding cake, haha, babaw much.
anyway, starting today til our anniversary date, i’ll be posting 1 DIY (do it yourself) project that i did for our civil wedding…i’ll start with our monogram…

----------------------------------

1st wedding anniversary countdown: day 2 -  WYB = “will you be”

i made this “message in a bottle” necklace WYB to ask our civil wedding’s female wedding party to be part of our entourage… also sent this to one pinoy groomsman…
here’s how i did it: http://2sqrtof3.blogspot.com/2011/11/messeage-in-bottle-necklace-wyb.html

----------------------------------

1st wedding anniversary countdown: day 3 - WYB for male entourage..

and here’s how i made them:
http://2sqrtof3.blogspot.com/2011/11/yet-another-diy-wyb.html

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown: day 4 - sand brush

since we had a beach wedding and we were encouraging the guests to go barefooted during the ceremony, i decided to make the sand brush…
as you can read from the label, it says : “to keep the sand off your toes”..
i ordered those cheap paint brush in bulk. printed the label sticker with our monogram printed on it (by the head) and explaining what the brush is for (at the handle) and
just tied a blue ribbon (because our motif is turquoise blue)

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown day: day 5 - door hangtags

my wedding coordinator friend appreciated this because it was easy for her to locate all the rooms of the entourage when distributing breakfast and knock at their doors when it’s call time…

the whites are made of thick glossy photo paper while the colored ones are card stocks… we didn’t use the colored ones and i reprinted the bride and groom’s using white paper..

we reused the white bride & groom’s door hang tag for our church wedding too to make it easier for photo & video & other suppliers to find our rooms…

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown day: day 7 - shell buotonniere

i also did our groomsmen (and bestman’s) shell boutonniere… it was easy to do but very tedious. gluing fabric is not a walk in the park, let me tell ya.

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown day: day 8 - barefoot sandals

i made my female entourage’s barefoot sandals. took me a while to decide on the beads to use.. they were all barefooted during the ceremony and they were just wearing the barefoot sandals i made them.

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown day: day 9 - beach-theme escort cards

since it’s a beach wedding, i want our escort cards to be beach themed too.

we used sand dollars & starfish, sand is decorative sand mixed with cape may shore’s sand… these were easy to do…it’s the actual card that’s tedious because i need to mark it with the guest’s dish preference (seafood, pork, beef or fish)… it’s tedious because each piece is customized and there are 45 of them…

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown day: day 10 - wedding favors

i forgot to post yesterday so this is for yesterday & today.
we made our wedding favors. ordered those empty apothecary glasses and designed and printed the label.
chocolates are from dove chocolates.

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown day: day 11 - parasols instead of flowers
instead of flowers, i opted for parasols. it’s cheaper (bought them from koyalwholesale.com).

trivia: our wedding color motif is supposedly tiffany blue but i can’t find tiffany blue parasols with patterns on it and i can’t find a decent tiffany blue sash. i found these turquoise parasols with patterns online and liked it so much i bought 6 of them (extra 2 just in case it got blewn away or got ripped)… the parasols ended up dictating what our final color motif would be.

p.s.
the white one is mine

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown: day 15 - luminaries table numbers

instead of the usual cardstock table numbers propped into a metal card holder or framed up, i got these luminaries instead… it’s made up of thick vellum paper with the ocean-like design, our names, date of the wedding and ofcourse table numbers on it…custom ordered them from etsy.com….it came flat and all i had to do is roll it up and remove the sticker cover found at the edge of the paper and stick the ends together…
then i bought those cheap battery-operated tealight candles that i placed inside the assembled luminaries…
it looked like a frosted vase with candles from a distance…really cool specially at night…

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown: day 16 - message in a bottle guestbook

we want our guestbook to be somehow beach-related too so we have this “message in a bottle” guestbook where guests write something on a recycled paper, roll it and tie it with a raffia string (that has trinket tied at the end) and then place it inside the bottle….

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown: day 17 - wedding programme

wedding program is also beach themed.
unlike in the philippines, here you put the names of the entourage as part of the programme.
in our programme, you actually have the ceremony sched (intro, exchanging of vows, when’s the sand ceremony gonna start, etc), reception sched (ie: cocktail is from what time til what time, 1st dance

----------------------------------
1st WA countdown: day 18 - aisle decorations

i bought several paper lanterns online, some shepherd’s hooks (from jo-annes fabric), dozens of red roses (from produce junction, and i also requested our bridesmaids to each bring a dozen roses) and yards and yards of white tulle to use for our aisle decoration…

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown: day 19 - gifts for the female ento

custom bag for the female ento carrying some goodies. goodies include: faux fur coat, black sequenced clutch bag, parasol, the programme, sandbrush, towellette, “minimergency for her” , the barefoot sandals inside a $1 blue jewelry box, wawa card..

WA = wedding anniversary

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown: day 20 - civil ceremony layout

i have visualized what our civil ceremony aisle would look like while on a train going to work and drew it on a notebook…

with the help of my friends & hubby, the layout that i have envisioned materialized…

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown: day 21 - wedding cake
our civil wedding cake, like all the other elements in our wedding, is beach themed, ergo the shells and everything…

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown: day 22 - bride hanger

bought this “bride” hanger from etsy….meaning to use this but used my dress form instead…

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown: day 23 - musicians

we hired a violinist and guitarist to play by the beach…
makes a whole lot of difference when you have musicians playing by the beach during the wedding ceremony… if you’re planning a beach ceremony do NOT skip the musicians…

(they played while guests are finding a seat & waiting for the ceremony to start, during the ceremony & during recession….. then they went inside the reception venue to continue serenading the guests during cocktail hour & reception…. they also played our first dance)

WA = wedding anniversary

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown: day 24 - cape may luvin'

no photo this time, but a video…

on our wedding day, we booked a “capemay moonlight” trolley tour for our guests…the tour showed them rows & rows of victorian houses, learned about courtship during the victorian era and some history about the famous victorian houses…. it was a perfect way to end our wedding day…

attached is a video bob & i took around christmas time (2011) in cape may, to give you an idea what our guests saw during the trolley tour…the last part of the video is our wedding’s reception and ceremony venue

Cape May Video from bluemarlinfish on Vimeo.

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown : day 25 - wedding gown

my civil wedding gown is from
maggie soterro but i got it cheap because it was about to get phased out and the bridal store i got this from is having a year-end sale… i just added a removable one shoulder strap and bought a brooch to add on the strap…

WA = wedding anniversary

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown: day 26 - message-in-a-bottle wedding invitations

we made our own (civil ) wedding invitation and our guests loved it because they thought it’s unique…. we were able to pull this off because we only need to make 26 of these “message in a bottle” invitations…

bob was the one who put the shells in (and made sure all bottles have equal amount of colored shells in it), i glued the ribbons, printed, rolled & placed the actual invitations inside the bottle & wrapped the boxes (where the bottle should go) with exotic paper that i bought from a tiny craft store in philly

here’s my blog post on how we made this:http://2sqrtof3.blogspot.com/2012/03/message-in-bottle-wedding-invitation.html

WA = wedding anniversary

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown: day 27 - wedding rings

i bought the hubby’s wedding ring and ofcourse the hubby bought all my rings (including the paris ring that i now use as my everyday wedding ring)

i got proposed at twice: http://2sqrtof3.blogspot.com/2011/07/got-engaged-twice.html

----------------------------------

1st WA countdown : day 28 - custom-painted wedding shoes

i ordered this custom-painted wedding shoes from figgieshoes.com…. painted on it is part of my vows and some of the drawings on the shoes either reflects our personality or tells our story....

more about the where, why, how & what about this wedding shoes at our wedding blogsite : http://2sqrtof3.blogspot

1st WA countdown: day 29 - wedding site/announcement
wedding site: mywedding.com/bobmarlin

and gown award goes to....

a few blogs ago, i posted about the church wedding gown hunt..... like i did with our civil wedding, i'll also post about how i found my "this is it" wedding gown for our church wedding....

it happened when i was looking at pronovias gowns.... i have a friend, who used to live in Morocco, told me about how his wife and him were strolling in the streets of spain when they saw a pronovias store....they went in and the wife decided she wants a pronovias gown for her wedding in the Philippines.... that was the first time i heard about pronovias.... i don't think i have a boyfriend yet that time but i do remember i started devouring their website  and salivating over their wedding gowns....

the pronovias gown that got the
hubby too mesmerized
fast forward, i was looking for wedding gowns.... one for the beach wedding appropriate gown and one for the church wedding....now, there's just one store near where i live that's a pronovias premium distributor and that's van cleve wedding pavillion in paoli.... tip: you would want to get your branded gowns from "premium" distributor to make sure it's not a knock off..... it was still kinda far from where i live but the next pronovias store is in New York, which is 2 hours away..... so i went there, with the hubby, fiance then.....yes, i was with the hubby, here's why..... but that didn't last long, we got yelled at about him helping me find my wedding gown and so i fired him as my wedding fashion consultant and signed up my girl friends to help me with my gown hunt, lol.... anyway, i wasn't sure how much pronovias gown would cost because they don't post the price online but what i do know is i want to try on some of their gowns, even for just the experience of having worn one....

i tried on a lot of pronovias gowns in all silhouettes and there was one that the hubby particulary likes (see photo on right).... i didn't like it though because it looks more like a red carpet or black tie event kinda gown and not weddingy.... and see that belt on that gown? that's $400, that's almost the price of my civil wedding gown.... there's one though that when i tried it on i just fell in love with it, that's the eresma.... but i still want to try on more gowns.....

on one of my many visits at van cleve

the first time i tried on the eresma

after that first visit at van cleve (the last visit to a gown store with the hubby) i still tried on more wedding gowns from different wedding stores and different gown brands.... i was able to find other church-wedding-gown worthy that i like but somehow i'm just not feeling it..... i went back to van cleve wedding pavillion the second time and this time with my friend Jet and her mom.... i tried on more pronovias gown..... they have new ones that day and tried on the hubby's fave and the one i like - eresma, to show my friend Jet and tita Helen.... there's another one that looks like eresma, called pamela, but it's pricier ($2,300) than eresma and heavier and it doesn't shimmer like eresma (haha, i like a few blings, lol)..... my friend and her mom agreed that the eresma is the better choice so on that day i told the girl who's waiting on me that i'm ordering eresma.....

so they got my measurements, i told them i want to add a detachable one-shoulder strap and that i want to change the back from zipper to corset (so i won't worry too much about gaining weight or losing weight), then  paid for the deposit.... and the best thing? since i bought it in december (dec 18, 2011, on my birthday!) they were having their year-end sale so i got it for $1,000..... for a pronovias gown, that's a steal!

changed the back from zipper
to corset

that's me and my gown's side view

i didn't get to see my gown a year later....remember, i ordered it dec. 18, 2011 and my gown arrived some time in december 2012....i was supposed to have my first fitting in June but that didn't happen....so in short my wedding gown was late and it gave me too much stress but the important thing is it arrived before we left for the philippines (we left jan 11, 2013) so i'm good.....

now, now, i know what you're thinking..... that the hubby saw this already..... you're right but i was banking on the thought that he saw me wear too many wedding gowns and he heard me say "i like this gown" too many times that i was hoping he won't remember what eresma looks like.... and i did ask him after the church wedding and he said he vaguely remembered it so at least my wedding gown is still a surprise, lol.....

i customized it by adding the detachable lace shoulder

peach and yellow... with my female entourage

not your ordinary wedding shoes

Our church wedding's theme in the Philippines is travel and Paris and that's the theme of my custom-painted wedding shoes too.

The hubby is always the first fan of my figgie shoes. He was so proud of my first figgie shoes that when he saw my second pair for our church wedding in the Philippines he was in awe! He even took the shoes with him to show off some of his female friends.Lol.

I was actually supposed to just use my civil wedding figgie shoes again, that's why if you look at my white figgie shoes you'll see two dates (may 12, 2012 and january 19, 2013). But I fell in love with my first figgie shoes that I decided to order another one but this time with heels and yeah, red. Red because I love contrasting colors. White (my gown) and red goes really nice together.

Like my first figgie shoes, each images on my second figgie shoes also has a story.

On the shoes you'll see our names and the date of our church wedding. You'll also see an image of a structure, that is Fernbrook Gardens, our reception venue.

On the shoes you'll also see the Eiffel Tower. It's not there for cosmetic reasons. It's there as a symbol, that's where the hubby proposed (which you might have already known by now if you saw my blog about my first figgie shoes).

If you notice there is some kind of a pattern image behind the main images, it's a lace. Since, like I mentioned, part of our theme is Paris, I have to add some Parisian touch to it and what more to represent that but with french lace (well, and the Eiffel tower of course).

On the other side you will see some numbers. They are actually dates and coordinates. Coordinates of where the hubby proposed and coordinates where we had our civil wedding.

On that other side you will also see more travel theme images. There's a compass and a globe. Those aren't there just because our theme is travel, it also represents the hubby and i's love for travel.

On that same side of the shoes you'll also see an image of my brooch bouquet and the image of my first figgie shoes. It's a flat white wedding shoes that was also hand-painted by figgieshoes.com for my civil wedding. If you want to know the story behind my first figgie shoes click me.

Again, the lace pattern is there.

The back has images too. Here you'll see the words "i do" painted on each side and a rose pattern.

I love love love my figgie shoes. If I have enough money, I would love to give all my female entourage a pair of figgie shoes as a present *sigh*. Unfortunately, we're working on a budget and can't afford it.  Anyway, below is a photo of my first figgie shoes with our luggage tin and chocolates wedding favors and an eiffel tower props. Notice the January 19, 2013 date.

Our wedding got featured at BridalBook

Yep!

Here's the link:http://www.femalenetwork.com/bridalbook/wedding-articles/real-weddings/featured-wedding-marlin-robert

It's just a bummer that after I sent them the story of the proposal they still got it wrong. So just to reiterate this is wrong:

Finally, one evening, while they were in front of the Eiffel tower, he found his perfect timing and asked her to be his wife.

it should be:

Finally, on New Year's eve, while they were in front of the Eiffel tower, he found his perfect timing and asked her to be his wife.

Oh and our ceremony decor is not from Design Avenue, it's 15-58, our florist.

And the HMUA, Mayone is my HMUA while Irene Manigo is the HMUA for my entourage.

so that's 6 suppliers total!

i think if you're an overseas bride you can do what i did, go home 6 months before to take of wedding items that needs your personal appearance and needs to be in production right away.... take for example the entourage's gowns...... the sooner you tell your couturier the correct color shade and fabric you want the earlier he/she can start making your entourage's gown......

or, you can just meet with your wedding suppliers weeks before your wedding but if i may suggest, if you want to do that, try to do 2 suppliers per day and don't squeeze more than that in a day, and then plan how many weeks you need to be home before your big day based on how many suppliers you need to meet..... why i said 2 suppliers per day? you don't want to be too stressed out days before your wedding..... now for stuff that needs to be taken cared of way in advance, like the entourage's gown or your gown, you might want to talk to your supplier on that.... most of them can handle overseas bride and you can even do fitting online so just talk to them...... as to the right shade of color and fabric to use, you can try sending your pegs via snail mail to your supplier.....

happy preps!

because details matter...

interviewer: so, marlin, what do you consider your strengths?
me: i have very good attention to details and....

.....unfortunately, i wasn't lying.... i said "unfortunately" because it's a double-edged sword, lol..... i think it comes with the territory because i'm a programmer.... anyway, this is a list of some of our wedding details and where and how we got them... click the photos for better view..... in no particular order...

i have been thinking of a unique guestbook and i have been toying on different ideas but we decided to stick to this mailbox and postcards... i bought the postcards from 2 suppliers from etsy.com (parkersupplies for the vintage-looking london & paris postcards and  frenchgirlsgarden and binkerbows for the other old postcards).... for our custom cardboard mailbox, i ordered it from lchrisman5.......

i also bought a cage for the "enveloped" gifts..... bought it on sale from michaels and just shipped it thru balikbayan box from the U.S...i like how our cage blends with the other Josiah table decorations....

i want our arrhae to be different and to also match our theme....so i asked some of my friends if they can donate some foreign coins.... these are from two of my friends and some coins are from my personal collection (i've been collecting foreign coins since elementary)...... the picture next to it is a door hangtag....there's supposed to be one for the groom too but i think the photographers missed it...

i bought the bridal hanger from etsy too (look for Lori Mills) ...and i was supposed to use this for our civil wedding but decided to use a dress form instead....now i brought this with me to the philippines because i was worried  we won't be able to borrow a dress form..... but it turned out that's not the case.... the couturier who made my ento's gown rented me one plus a steamer....

our boarding pass escort cards was from Meghann Gillette... i told her what our color is and what we want on it..... she just gave us a one-page edittable PDF file and i manually typed in the guests name and their table names (which are famous city names) and we printed and cut it ourselves..... the passport wedding invitation was from etsy too, Ginger ..... she was so patient with me....i don't know how many times i have asked her to make some changes, or add something.... i got the fernbrook logo from fernbrook itself....

next is our wedding favors.... i ordered 120 pcs of mini suitcase favor tins from beau-coup.com and we ordered a custom paris sticker with our names and date of the wedding....unfortunately, you can not customize the "Merci for taking this trip" but we don't mind..... and then i bought 15 lbs of globe chocolates .... and i have small eiffel tower trinket that i added as an after thought, lol.... i'm supposed to make a napkin ring but ODed  (over dosed) on DIY stuff on my civil wedding that this time i just ordered a lot of stuff, haha.... got the eiffel tower trinkets from etsy too, from happysupplies.... they ship from china so expect it wouldn't arrive until after a month if you're in the U.S.... the photo of a caricature below is our save the date.... ordered the caricature from jo acierto and then i bought some images from a digital scrapbooking website and made a postcard using adobe elements.... then we asked our friend rv to print it for us (thanks arvs!).....

if you're a filipino you know about arrhae and cord and veil and candle and bible used as part of the wedding ceremony.... well, i customized all those too, but then again i just ordered it from someone...that someone is janess ojeda of Trinkets and Favors.... i got a discount so this package is for 4,200 plus 200 shipping fee (she's from manila and i ask her to ship them at my manila address)

our misalette is from jun hernandez (theresecarmelaweddings@yahoo.com).. 30 copies for 1,500 pesos...suceeding copies is 400 for every 10 pieces.... we just ordered 30 pieces and hired a church commentator rin for 1,000..... he patterned the design of our misalette from our wedding invitation...

the Todo frame. Now this one is DIY.... again i just used  images that i bought from a digital scrapbook website and used adobe elements to stitch the images together and type the wordings.... we call this the Reception To Do List.... the frame is .70 cents from ikea and is back to back...i lugged this around in our luggage on our flight to the Philippines...we had like 15 of these...

we also made the goodie box for the kids table.... this just have small packets of candies some small toys, finger puppets, crayola, etc..... we also ordered a custom coloring book from etsy....Kelli and Greta....she just gave us a soft copy version and we just printed it at home and added a ribbon to keep them intact.....

we also made some goodie bag for the female entourage..... i just bought a peach fan and an "emergency" chocolate that i bought from cracker barrel..... i bought the emergency chocolate because i thought it's cute, haha.... and don't worry it taste good, hee hee

since we're having a travel (and paris) theme i want to use city names instead of a table number.... below are just some of the table names.... what we did is i made all those photo with city names (some of the photos used are actually mine, like the venice photo below) and sent it via email to Josiah (our caterer)....i just asked them to print it, put it on a frame and display it on each of the tables..... we also requested for the stamp napkin ring... we got that idea from Josiah's travel theme...we just changed the ribbon to peach.... and we specifically asked for that laced charger plates.... there are a lot of laces on the table setting including the chair covers to match our (travel and) paris theme....

now for my favorite itemssss (yes madaming ssss, haha)... my custom painted shoes from figgieshoes.com...... i have two.... initially i was thinking of using the same shoe i used for our civil wedding (which is a flat ballet shoes) but i changed my mind and decided to go for something with heels.... but i was still able to use both of them....i'm not a heels kinda girl and my feet hurts quickly with heels....so i was wearing my flat shoes the entire time during the reception and was just wearing the red shoes during the ceremony and pictorials.....

i DIYed  (do-it-yourself) my brooch bouquet (here's how i made my brooch bouquet )  and i have already used it once on our civil wedding by the beach.... i collected all the brooches for a year thru ebay, flea markets and estate sale..... some are really old, like as old as 1920s and some are new....

i also would to take your attention to the white, furry-like fabric (see photo above and below and the first few photos above), i brought that with me because they make for a very good background..... i bought that from ikea and shipped it thru balikbayan box.... yes, photo background is important to me too....i told you, details is everything! lol....

our cake! i love our cake.... since we are overseas couple we have to do everything via email.....but i was able to do taste testing during my short visit to the philippines last august.... but the design and details of the cake was just via email....and i'm very happy they execute each and every request/design i asked them to do..... below is our peach and yellow themed sugar flowers cascading cake.....oh, did i tell you everything is edible? yep, as in everything...including the leaves... we also ordered mini cakes (for the ninongs and ninangs) and cupcakes for the entourage from them.... supplier is judy uson, the cake artist

color is a little off but the main cake is really ivory
it just looks pink on the photo

from my cousin's camera..nasistensyahan na, haha...

our onsite studio....
we thought photobooth is too common for our taste...don't get me wrong they're still fun but we just want to be different...and since me and my cousins and my college friends are photo studio addicts we decided, why not! i just brought some props with me like the boas, hats, masks, etc....

we just have one requirement, we want eiffel tower in the picture and we want it to look indoor...so we want drapes and sofa and flowers.... the onsite studio team didn't disappoint..... (we booked their 4d)....

guests posing, and guests lining up
to get their photos
